Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max With a Variable Aperture Camera

Apple has refreshed its flagship smartphone line: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are the first models in the series with a variable aperture on the main camera. Together with a new sensor, the A20 Pro chip and a redesigned cooling system, this is the most substantial change to the Pro models in several generations, and it targets photography, sustained performance and battery life rather than exterior design.

A variable aperture replaces the fixed opening

The 48MP Fusion Main camera now uses a mechanism of six laser-cut blades that move smoothly between aperture settings. In low light the phone opens up to ƒ/1.48 to gather more light, portraits are shot at ƒ/1.8, and for group photos the aperture narrows to ƒ/4 so that people standing in the back row stay in focus.

The camera picks a value automatically, but any of the four settings can also be selected by hand. Apple has opened an API that gives third-party apps access to the full aperture range. A new sensor and a reworked computational imaging pipeline play an equally important role here, since they determine how much detail survives in the final shot.

Manual controls and proof that a shot is untouched

Pro controls in the Camera app add manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram shows how exposure is distributed across the scene.

Apple Reference Image signs the sensor data at the moment of capture, and Private Cloud Compute then develops it into an unalterable reference shot. It sits in the Photos app next to the main image and makes it possible to see whether the frame has been edited.

Updated Photographic Styles introduce texture and grain controls, so the character of an image and the rendering of skin can be tuned more precisely. Video gains as well: Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture to footage shot at up to 60 fps, Time-lapse records 4K in Dolby Vision HDR, and Audio Mix uses new algorithms for voice processing and can isolate music.

A20 Pro and the new cooling system

The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process. It combines a 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and a 7-core GPU that, according to Apple, is up to 40 percent faster than the graphics in the A19 Pro. Memory bandwidth is up by 50 percent, and the Neural Engine now consists of two 16-core blocks: 32 cores in total and double the AI performance of last year's chip.

How long the phone holds those clocks matters just as much. Memory has been moved out of the chip's thermal path and placed beside the die, allowing the processor to sit directly against a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the one in iPhone 17 Pro. Apple puts the gain in sustained performance at up to 40 percent over the previous generation.

Wireless connectivity is handled by Apple's own N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The C2 modem replaces the C1X and, according to the company, uploads noticeably faster, consumes 15 percent less energy and supports mmWave in the U.S.

Battery life and the move to eSIM

Models without a SIM tray play back up to 36 hours of video on iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max. For the larger model this is the biggest battery life increase in iPhone history: the space once taken by the physical slot now holds a bigger cell, which adds roughly two hours of video playback.

Charging has also improved. Both models reach 50 percent in around 15 minutes over a cable or in 30 minutes wirelessly, and Apple separately claims about seven hours of video playback after five minutes of wired charging on iPhone 18 Pro Max. The eSIM-only versions will be sold in twelve markets, among them the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico and the UAE.

Dynamic Island, iOS 27 and the new Siri

The Dynamic Island is smaller yet carries more information, showing up to three Live Activities at once. Face ID works as before, unlocking the phone, authenticating purchases and signing in to apps.

The rebuilt Siri AI arrives as a beta alongside iOS 27: the assistant draws on personal context, understands what is on screen and can act on what the camera is pointed at.

Other iOS 27 additions include the Spatial Reframing, Extend and upgraded Clean Up editing tools, photorealistic imagery in Image Playground, Notify Me in Safari for tracking changes on web pages, and iPhone Handoff for switching between two iPhone models on the same number. Expanded parental settings give more control over what children can access.

Both models come in four finishes, including the new burgundy. The accessory range has been updated as well, with Silicone and TechWoven cases, a redesigned Clear Case, FineWoven wallets and a new Wrist Strap for carrying the phone hands-free.
