Huawei Unveils Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design with 200MP Telephoto and Satellite Calling

Huawei has expanded its flagship Mate 90 lineup with its most expensive model, the HUAWEI Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design. The phone pairs the in-house Kirin 9050 Pro processor with a large-sensor 200MP telephoto camera, a 6,800mAh battery and satellite connectivity, while standing apart from the rest of the series with premium materials and the recognizable octagonal Star Diamond camera module. For Huawei, it serves as a showcase of homegrown technology developed under US restrictions on advanced chip supplies.

Build and Display

The Mate 90 RS uses a polished titanium frame, and Huawei refers to the overall construction as Kunlun Basalt Architecture. The display is covered with Basalt Kunlun Glass, which the company says offers better resistance to scratches and drops along with reduced reflections. The back combines optical Kunlun Glass with a dynamic grating glass that creates a textured pattern. The body is rated IP68 for submersion down to 6 meters and IP69 for resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. All of this comes at a cost in weight: the phone measures 8.4mm thick and weighs 248g.

The front is taken up by a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED panel with a resolution of 2848 × 1320 pixels and an LTPO adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz. Huawei rates peak brightness at 12,000 nits, although the figure was measured at 1% APL, so it applies to small bright areas of the image rather than the full screen. For users sensitive to flicker, the display uses 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

Performance and Battery

The phone runs on the Kirin 9050 Pro, the same chip found in the Mate 90 Pro Max. Huawei claims a 31% performance gain over the previous generation. It comes with 16GB of RAM and a choice of 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage, with no memory card support. The software is HarmonyOS 7.

The 6,800mAh battery supports wired charging at up to 100W and wireless charging at up to 50W, though reaching the maximum wireless speed requires a Huawei-branded charging stand. The phone can also charge other devices, with 18W wired and wireless reverse charging. A charger and a protective case are included in the box.

Cameras

The main camera uses a 50MP RYYB sensor with a variable f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture and optical image stabilization. Huawei quotes an 18 EV dynamic range for it, which should help in scenes with strong contrast between light and shadow. It is joined by a 40MP ultrawide and the key upgrade of the camera module: a 200MP telephoto camera with a large sensor, f/2.6 aperture, optical stabilization and 4x optical zoom, which also doubles as a tele-macro lens. Full 200MP resolution is available only at 4x. A third-generation Red Maple spectral camera handles accurate color reproduction, while selfies and face unlock rely on a 13MP front camera and a 3D depth sensor.

For those who need more than the built-in cameras offer, Huawei has released the XMAGE Z10 external module, which attaches to the back of the Mate 90 RS. It features a 1-inch sensor and 10x continuous optical zoom covering 24–240mm, and is sold separately starting at 5,999 yuan (~$845).

Connectivity

Satellite connectivity is provided by two systems: Tiantong for calls and BeiDou for messaging. BeiDou messaging works only in mainland China.

The Mate 90 RS supports four SIM cards, two nano-SIM and two eSIM, with three of them able to stay on standby simultaneously. The feature will arrive via a firmware update.

Another new feature lets up to four HarmonyOS 7 devices pool their connectivity to support one another, which Huawei says speeds up file transfers on congested networks. A new outdoor mode offers cycling and hiking routes, and if the user falls, a Huawei smartwatch can trigger an emergency call from the phone and share the user's location.

Huawei unveiled the Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design on October 1, 2026, in China alongside the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro and Mate 90 Pro Max. The 16GB/512GB version starts at 12,999 yuan (~$1,830).
