Huawei Unveils Mate 90 Pro Max with Kirin 9050 Pro and 200MP Telephoto Camera

Huawei has expanded the Mate 90 series with its Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max flagship. The phone runs on Kirin 9050 series chips and pairs a dual-layer OLED display with a 200MP periscope telephoto camera and a 6,800mAh battery. Alongside it, the company introduced a collector's edition that differs in cover glass, memory configuration and support for a detachable modular camera.

Display and Build

The Mate 90 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED panel with a 2848 × 1320 resolution and an LTPO adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz. According to Huawei, the dual-layer structure raises peak brightness to 12,000 nits while extending the panel's lifespan. Users sensitive to flicker get 1440Hz PWM dimming, and the touch sampling rate is 300Hz.

The screen is protected by third-generation Kunlun Glass. The 8.15mm-thick body weighs 234g and is rated IP68 for submersion up to 6 meters as well as IP69, meaning it can withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets.

Performance and Memory

The base configuration with 12GB of RAM uses the Kirin 9050, while 16GB versions get the higher-end Kirin 9050 Pro. Storage options are 512GB or 1TB, with no memory card slot. The phone ships with HarmonyOS 7.0.

Cameras

The 50MP main camera has a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0 and optical image stabilization, allowing control over depth of field without relying on software blur. It is joined by a 40MP ultra-wide camera and a 200MP periscope telephoto with OIS that also handles macro shots. All three cameras use RYYB sensors, which let in more light than conventional RGGB designs.

With focal lengths of 13, 24 and 89mm, the phone offers roughly 4x optical zoom, 8x optical-quality zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. A separate third-generation Red Maple camera handles color accuracy. Video recording goes up to 4K, including Log, and photos can be saved in RAW.

On the front, there is a 13MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus and a 3D depth sensor used for face recognition. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner is also available for unlocking.

Battery and Charging

The battery has a typical capacity of 6,800mAh (6,615mAh rated), and Huawei claims up to 45 hours of video playback. Wired charging supports up to 100W, while wireless charging reaches 50W. The phone can also charge other devices, either over a cable at 18W or wirelessly.

Connectivity

The Mate 90 Pro Max supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1. Beyond that standard set, it offers several less common features.

BeiDou satellite messaging lets users send text messages when there is no mobile network coverage. The feature works only in mainland China.

NearLink E2.0 provides a wireless connection to accessories and other devices that support this Chinese standard.

eSIM works alongside two nano-SIM slots, so the phone can store up to four numbers, three of which can be active at the same time.

Collector's Edition

The Mate 90 Pro Max collector's edition comes only with the Kirin 9050 Pro and 16GB of RAM. Its display is covered by Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, and the weight rises to 235g. The key difference is support for the Z10 modular camera with 10x optical zoom, which attaches to the phone via an H1 mount. The module is sold separately for 5,999 yuan (~$845), while a bundle with the phone costs 19,499 yuan (~$2,740).

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max was unveiled on October 1, with sales in China starting the same day. The 12/512GB version costs 9,499 yuan (~$1,335), the 16/512GB version sells for 9,999 yuan (~$1,405), and the collector's edition is priced at 10,999 yuan (~$1,545) for 16/512GB and 12,999 yuan (~$1,825) for 16GB/1TB.
