TCL Unveils the Slim P80 With a 6.83-Inch AMOLED Display
TCL has expanded its smartphone line-up with the TCL P80, the entry model of the new P80 family shown at IFA 2026 alongside the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro. The key difference from its siblings is the absence of the company's NXTPAPER technology: instead, the manufacturer has focused on a conventional large-diagonal AMOLED panel housed in a notably thin body. The combination targets buyers who want a big screen for video and social media without carrying a bulky handset.
Slim Body and Water Resistance
According to the manufacturer's own measurements, the body is roughly 7.5mm thick and weighs 178g. That is below the segment average for a phone with a 6.83-inch screen, so the device should remain comfortable to hold and easy to pocket. TCL developed the exterior together with materials specialist Chris Lefteri, giving the back panel a satin finish and keeping the colour palette consistent across the series. The chassis carries an IP68 rating, and selected durability tests were conducted under MIL-STD-810H procedures.
Display and Sound
The phone uses a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2772 × 1280 and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness is quoted at up to 3200 nits, which should keep the screen readable in direct sunlight, while DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage reaches 100%. The side bezels narrow to 1.38mm and the touch sampling rate stands at 2560Hz, which affects responsiveness in games and during scrolling. Audio is handled by stereo speakers with DTS support.
Cameras
The main module is built around a 50MP sensor with a 1/1.56-inch format, an f/1.88 aperture and both optical and electronic stabilisation. Its large pixels and four-in-one binning are meant to improve low-light shots, an area where mid-range phones usually struggle. Next to it sits an 8MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus, while selfies and video calls rely on a 32MP front module. On the software side, TCL lists the MuseFilm filter set and an AI Motion Capture mode for fast-moving scenes.
Performance and Battery Life
Power comes from the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Elite platform built on a 4nm process. The phone carries 8GB of physical RAM with up to 16GB of virtual expansion drawn from storage, and buyers get either 128GB or 256GB of internal memory depending on the market. A 5000mAh battery supports wired charging at up to 45W, although a compatible adapter is sold separately. TCL's internal testing points to roughly 17 hours of video playback or 11 hours of gaming on a charge, though real-world figures will depend on how the phone is used.
AI Features
The software side draws on Google services and TCL's own tools, with availability of individual features depending on the region, interface language and firmware version.
Google Gemini serves as the main AI assistant for queries, suggestions and text-related tasks.
Circle to Search looks up an on-screen object after the user circles it with a finger, without switching between apps.
AI Smart Translator handles real-time speech translation, including face-to-face conversations between speakers of different languages.
The TCL P80 goes on sale in Europe on 3 September 2026, with configuration availability varying by market and sales channel. The box contains a cable and a TPU case alongside the phone, while a charging adapter is not included.
