Sony Unveils Xperia 10 VIII With a Brighter Display and Upgraded Speakers

Sony has refreshed the midrange part of its smartphone lineup: the Xperia 10 VIII replaces last year's Xperia 10 VII and focuses on everyday convenience rather than raw performance. The company raised screen brightness, reworked the stereo speakers and added a dedicated menu for payment apps, while the hardware platform carries over from its predecessor.

Key differences from the Xperia 10 VII

The list of changes in this generation is short and almost entirely tied to how the phone behaves in daily use: checking maps outdoors, listening to music and paying at the checkout. Sony benchmarks every improvement against the Xperia 10 VII.

Brighter display. The screen is roughly 50% brighter than on the previous model, and automatic colour adjustment borrowed from higher-tier Xperia displays adapts the image to ambient lighting.

Louder stereo speakers. The revised speaker system raises overall volume by about 15%, while bass is more than 30% stronger according to Sony.

Rewards & Pay menu. A double press of the power button opens quick access to payment apps and loyalty cards, so a checkout transaction can be handled with one hand.

Memory handling has changed as well. The 8 GB of RAM is now backed by up to 6 GB of virtual RAM, which the company says should make app switching smoother.

The hardware carries over

The Xperia 10 VIII runs on the same Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 platform as its predecessor and ships with 128 GB of internal storage. Sony has kept two options that are increasingly rare on modern smartphones: a microSDXC slot supporting cards of up to 2 TB and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The camera set has also been carried over from the Xperia 10 VII. A 50 MP main module with a 1/1.56-inch sensor and optical stabilisation is paired with a 13 MP ultrawide camera, and an 8 MP sensor sits on the front. The 5,000 mAh battery and the 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate are unchanged too. A dedicated shutter button launches the camera even when the display is off.

Built around longevity

Sony estimates the battery lasts up to two days on a charge, while optimised charging is meant to preserve its capacity for up to four years. The phone ships with Android 16 and is promised up to four operating system upgrades and up to six years of security updates.

Design and colours

The rear panel is made of a transparent material with a matte coating that produces a translucent-layer effect, a finish Sony markets as Translucent Layer and offers in three colours. The 8.3 mm body weighs 168 grams, which means the dimensions match the Xperia 10 VII exactly. A first-party case with a built-in stand that holds the phone in portrait and landscape orientation is sold separately.

Pricing, however, has moved up. The Xperia 10 VII launched in the autumn of 2025 at around $550, whereas Sony has set a noticeably higher European price for the Xperia 10 VIII despite the nearly identical specification sheet.
