Google Unveils Pixel Watch 5 With Proactive Gemini AI and Breathing Emergency Detection

Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, the newest generation of its Wear OS smartwatch built around proactive artificial intelligence and expanded health monitoring. The watch runs on a new Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated platform, brings on-device Gemini Intelligence, and introduces breathing emergency detection — a feature no other smartwatch brand has offered before.

Proactive Gemini Intelligence and a faster platform

The biggest shift with Pixel Watch 5 is a move toward proactive AI. The At a Glance feature now surfaces relevant information on the watch face automatically — a boarding pass as you step into the airport, or the remaining stops on your morning commute. Interacting with Gemini is faster thanks to an upgraded Raise to Talk gesture: simply lift your wrist to launch a workout, set a timer, or pull up a dinner reservation from Gmail.

Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions turns multi-step tasks into a single action. If a family member asks about dinner plans, Gemini automatically finds the answer in the calendar and surfaces it on the wrist, without the need to reach for a phone. A simple double-pinch gesture lets you confirm and send the suggested reply hands-free.

All of this is powered by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip paired with a power-efficient dual-chip architecture. Compared with Pixel Watch 4, RAM is up 50% and CPU performance is up 12%, adding up to a 20% overall speed increase.

GPS accuracy and new fitness tools

Pixel Watch 5 delivers the most accurate GPS route tracking Google has built into a smartwatch, offering twice the accuracy of the previous generation in challenging environments such as dense high-rises or covered trails. Google traces satellite ray paths through 3D building models drawn from Google Maps and taps into a global network of weather reference stations to adjust readings for local atmospheric conditions in real time. According to the company's own testing, Pixel Watch 5 outperforms both the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro on route accuracy.

A new on-wrist Strength Training experience is coming soon, offering step-by-step guidance through sets and rest periods and letting users log weights and reps directly from the watch. Google Health Coach can build custom strength routines around personal goals or adapt workouts based on recovery metrics like sleep and heart rate variability — swapping an intense run for indoor yoga during a heat wave, for example.

Sleep tracking accuracy is up 15%, with automations that pause audiobooks once you fall asleep and a dedicated bedtime watch face. Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before an alarm and wakes users during a lighter sleep phase for a gentler start to the day.

Pixel Watch 5 pre-orders opened August 12, with general availability starting August 20. Pricing starts at $399 for the 41mm model and $429 for the 45mm model.

Health Guardian: new health monitoring features

Pixel Watch 5 builds on safety features introduced in earlier generations, including loss of pulse detection and satellite SOS communications. The headline addition this year is breathing emergency detection, an industry-first feature for a smartwatch.

Using multimodal sensors — PPG, accelerometer, and barometer — alongside on-device AI, the watch continuously monitors for severe, persistent drops in blood oxygen saturation that can result from drug toxicity, severe pneumonia, or choking. If an emergency is detected and the wearer is unresponsive, Pixel Watch 5 can automatically call emergency services and transmit an exact location. The feature is launching first in Europe.

Beyond emergency response, Google is adding monthly health trend reports built on proprietary Health Foundation Models trained on billions of minutes of sensor data. The first detailed summary arrives after one month of wear.

The new monthly summaries cover blood pressure trends, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance trends. The goal is to help users spot metabolic, respiratory, and cardiovascular shifts early, before they turn into acute symptoms.

The new Health Guardian features, including blood pressure and insulin resistance trends, along with the Strength Training mode, are set to roll out later, in September 2026.

Design and display

Visually, Pixel Watch 5 is nearly unchanged from its predecessor: the same domed Actua 360 display with 3,000 nits of peak brightness, Gorilla Glass protection, and a 12.3mm case thickness. The watch comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes and is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, with the ability to withstand depths of up to 50 meters. Second-generation Active Bands are made from soft HNBR material with a comfortable coating.
