Samsung Unveils Flex Titanium Display Technology for Next Galaxy Foldables

Samsung Electronics has unveiled Flex Titanium, a new display technology designed for its next generation of foldable Galaxy smartphones. Built on seven generations of foldable engineering, the structure tackles two long-standing complaints about the format — crease visibility and long-term durability. Full device details are expected at Galaxy Unpacked, which multiple reports point to being held on July 22 in London.

Seven Generations in the Making

Samsung helped popularize AMOLED displays as far back as 2007 before moving into flexible form factors. Across seven generations of Galaxy foldables, the company gathered user feedback pointing to one consistent request: a larger, more immersive screen with a far less noticeable crease, without sacrificing durability or portability.

A Titanium Film and Plate

To balance thinness, flexibility and strength, Samsung's engineers turned to titanium — a material already used in satellite antennas and Mars rover wheels. Inside the display stack, it appears in two components: a titanium-alloy film beneath the OLED panel and a titanium plate positioned below it.

The titanium-alloy film replaces the polymer layer used in earlier models, delivering roughly 20 times greater mechanical stiffness while measuring about a third the thickness of a human hair.

The titanium plate uses precision hole processing to eliminate air gaps between the display module and its adhesive layer, allowing tighter bonding, more stable support when unfolded, and continued flexibility at the fold.

Samsung also paired the new structure with a higher-resolution display architecture and new organic materials, aiming to sharpen image quality while improving power efficiency.

Sunghoon Moon, EVP of Samsung's Mobile R&D Office, said the company's strength in the foldable category comes from pairing user needs with technologies that deliver real everyday benefits.

Kyung-Jin Yoo, head of Samsung Display's mobile display product development team, added that the micro-patterned holes in the titanium plate's fold section made it possible to combine flexibility with strong durability, while the new architecture and organic materials strengthen the competitiveness of upcoming Galaxy foldables.

Flex Titanium is set to debut with Samsung's next foldable lineup, expected to include the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8.
