Xiaomi Unveils the Foldable Xiaomi 18 Fold With In-House XRING O3 Chip

Xiaomi has introduced the Xiaomi 18 Fold, the company's first wide-format foldable, which opens into something closer to a notepad than a tablet. It is also the first commercial device built around Xiaomi's own XRING O3 chip, which makes the launch about more than a new form factor: the company is putting its in-house silicon into the most expensive model in its line-up. At the same time, Xiaomi moved the flagship to a new generation of memory and redesigned the hinge assembly.

A new format: two screens with paper-like proportions

The outer screen measures 5.38 inches with a resolution of 1712 x 1168 pixels, while the inner folding panel is 7.58 inches with 2364 x 1672 pixels. Both are LTPO OLED displays with an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz and peak brightness of 4,000 nits, and their aspect ratio is close to that of a standard sheet of paper. That geometry sets the device apart from the elongated screens of conventional book-style foldables and is aimed primarily at reading, working with documents and running two apps side by side.

Folded, the body measures 117.8 x 83.6 x 10.68 mm; unfolded, it is 117.8 x 163.8 x 5.02 mm and weighs 219 grams. In footprint the phone sits closer to a passport or a cardholder than to a regular smartphone, and it weighs about as much as a non-folding flagship.

Hinge and body protection

The flexible screen is covered by double-layer ultra-thin UTG glass, while the outer display and the back panel are protected by Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0. The new-generation Dragon Bone hinge uses a three-link structure, and according to Xiaomi the average crease depth does not exceed 30 microns.

The body carries both IP58 and IP59 ratings, meaning it is rated not only for immersion but also for high-pressure hot water jets.

XRING O3, LPDDR6 memory and HyperOS 4

The hardware platform is the model's main argument: for the first time Xiaomi has combined its own processor, a new generation of RAM and an updated system in a single device.

The XRING O3 is built on a 3 nm process and pairs ten CPU cores clocked at up to 4.35 GHz with a 16-core GPU. Xiaomi describes it as the first mobile chip to pass the five-million mark in AnTuTu.

The top configuration is the first to use LPDDR6 memory with 113.8 GB/s of bandwidth, while the remaining versions stick with LPDDR5X. Storage across the range follows the UFS 4.1 standard.

The phone ships with HyperOS 4 based on Android 17 and the updated Super XiaoAi 2.0 voice assistant.

Leica cameras

The 200 MP main module uses a 1/1.56-inch sensor and a Leica Summilux lens with a 23 mm equivalent focal length, an f/1.7 aperture and optical stabilisation. It is joined by a 50 MP wide-angle camera at 17 mm with an f/2.4 aperture and a 50 MP periscope telephoto at 80 mm with an f/2.8 aperture, stabilisation and 3.5x optical zoom.

Video is recorded in 8K at 24 fps and in 4K at up to 60 fps. Selfies and video calls are handled by a 16 MP front camera.

Battery and charging

Inside sits a 6,000 mAh Jinshajiang battery with a silicon-carbon anode. A 20 percent silicon content allowed Xiaomi to push energy density to 920 Wh/l, which is what kept the unfolded body down to 5.02 mm. The phone supports 67 W wired and 50 W wireless charging.

The base version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage is priced at CNY 10,999 (~$1640). The 12/512 GB model costs CNY 11,999 (~$1790), the 16/512 GB version CNY 12,999 (~$1940), and the 16 GB + 1 TB configuration with LPDDR6 memory CNY 14,999 (~$2240). A separate Ceramic Special Edition made of silicon nitride comes only in the 16 GB + 1 TB configuration at CNY 15,999 (~$2390) and is limited to 1,500 units. Xiaomi has not announced release plans outside China.
