Xiaomi Unveils Mijia Flip-Lid Insulated Mug 2 With an Auto-Locking Lid
Xiaomi has expanded its Mijia household accessory range with the Mijia Flip-Lid Insulated Mug 2, a thermos cup with a flip-up lid that can be opened with one hand. Compared with the previous generation, the lid mechanism now has an automatic lock, and the company rates the cup for up to six hours of both heat and cold retention.
The mug comes in four colours and two body finishes: matte and pearlescent.
A Lid That Locks by Itself
The defining feature of the model is the lid design. To open the mug, the button is either slid to the left or simply pressed, after which the lid flips up on its own. The whole sequence is built around one-handed use, for moments when the other hand is busy.
The automatic lock engages the moment the lid is closed, so the mug can go straight into a bag without a separate check of the catch.
Xiaomi already used a slide-and-press mechanism in the first generation of its flip-lid thermos cup, so the new model is best seen as a refinement of a proven solution rather than a fundamentally different approach.
Liner and Drinking Assembly Materials
The drinking spout and the filter are made of PPSU, a heat-resistant polymer that is less prone to holding on to odours. The same material is used in baby bottles, and here it covers the part that comes into direct contact with the drink.
The removable spout detaches from the lid, so the drinking assembly can be washed separately instead of relying on rinsing the body alone.
The inner liner is made of 316L stainless steel. Xiaomi has made its walls thinner and finished the surface with electrolytic mirror polishing. Usable capacity is 500 ml.
Vacuum Insulation and Temperature Retention
A tailless vacuum process is used between the inner and outer layers of the body. Unlike the classic method, it leaves no technological nub on the base, which simplifies the construction of the shell.
According to the company, the mug keeps a drink above 68 °C for up to six hours and below 10 °C for six hours as well. Xiaomi has quoted similar figures for its titanium thermos cups, but this model uses stainless steel, which is reflected in the price.
A copper coating on the inner liner improves the purity of the vacuum, so the outer surface stays comfortable to hold even when the mug is filled with boiling water.
The crowdfunding campaign on the Xiaomi Youpin platform starts on 2 September. The campaign price is 79 yuan (~$11), while the suggested retail price is 109 yuan (~$15).
